• About the Author

Ulrike Almut Sandig's poems are elaborate earworms: influenced by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, they're firmly rooted in a present she records in the sonar of her verse – like the bat in one of her poems, which flies out of a laboratory window after having both its eyes put out.

Using her uniquely idiosyncratic language as an auditory instrument, Ulrike Almut Sandig meticulously captures the depths of contemporary eeriness and depicts a utopian alternative to a homeland where humans are not soulless, furless animals but can hold up their heads and say: 'I am'.

It has previously been said of Ulrike Almut Sandig's work that 'these poems convince through linguistic jokes, self-irony and humour, philosophical fantasy and an emphatic poetic conception of the self' (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), and the same is true of this volume.
