Loose, an unsuccessful author and occasional ghost-writer, is invited by his client, Professor Maurer, to the annual meeting of a botanical society somewhere in the provinces.
When Loose reads in the newspaper of a number of suicides which have taken place in a mystery-shrouded forest close to the location of the meeting he accepts the invitation.
The conference hotel, the neighbouring village and the forest radiate a tangible sense of threat. Loose decides to get to the bottom of the mystery that surrounds the place.
